The Mexican Cowboy Coyote and The Thing in the Sky Bruce Saunders Thom Laz 9780984049318 Books Reviews
This book is for those who love stories with whimsy and a touch of fantasy; a connection with the land and culture of the American SW. It will lure you in and hold you.
A ridiculously irreverent, tenderly moving tribute to Life with all of it's animate and inanimate characters. A grand assortment of humans, animals, biobots, and divine beings find creative ways to peacefully unite for the good of all. Lots of smiles and laughs with the kind of great humor that pokes fun of us all as we sojourn all too briefly on Planet Earth.
A charming, thoughtful book for the reader who enjoys and appreciates talking animals, justice for the downtrodden, and a moral lesson that slips in like a soft Southwestern night. Almost like Steinbeck who saw value in people who were not high on the social ladder. Saunders makes us think about these people and animals.
A wonderful fable populated by characters from every realm. There's Father Gallapo, Lucifer, sharp-tongued Cece, the bio-brain and some biobots, attack hummingbirds, a fat-bellied Mexican Cowboy and of course, Coyote, the trickster and teacher, along with other animals and their gods. Cowboy's slightly irascible God speaks in bold typeface and says things like "If I wanted only Obedience from my creatures I would have created machines." A sociologist and world traveler, Saunders has a keen imagination and a well honed talent for weaving bedtime stories for thoughtful people of any age. Full of action and adventure, the tale carries its animal, human and other-worldly characters through political and ethical conflicts, protests and even a Southwest-style flash flood as it carries away a "porta-confessional." Throughout, Saunders reveals the value of connections in all directions as he chronicles chaos, loneliness, hypocrisy and love with wry humor, wisdom and affection.
The Mexican Cowboy, Coyote and The Thing in the Sky is a pleasure, with prose that flows easily and an engaging cast of characters. The author’s deep affection for the Southwest is contagious and motivates me, a confirmed and sedentary Easterner, to think of travel to those parts. This is a funny book but do not be fooled. The author’s deceptively light-hearted, even mischievous, style belies commentary on much of what is important - or should be important - in life. Even as I laughed aloud, I suspected I was missing much. No worry, because this is one of those books to be read and reread. Equally satisfying as a storybook fable enjoyed by the young or required reading for a course in philosophy!
